Biography
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Louisa PHUNG Suk Yee graduated with a Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree and a Diploma in Theatre from Capilano University, which sits on the stolen lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She is based in the city known as Vancouver, BC.
Louisa is a neurodivergent director and writer for both stage and screen. “Hope and Grace” was nominated for Best Canadian Short Film at the 2021 Regina International Film Festival and Awards, won Best Cinematography and Best Ensemble at the World Wide Women’s Film Festival, and Outstanding Screenplay and Outstanding BC Film at the Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival. Louisa completed the 2021/2022 Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre’s MSG Lab 1 and 2, which supported the development of her first stage play, “Embers of the Past.” Louisa was selected for the Women in Focus Lab at the 2024 Whistler Film Festival, attended the 2025 Hong Kong FilmArt as a delegate with the Racial Equity Screen Office (RESO), and the 2025 Banff World Media Festival as part of Netflix’s Diversity of Voices initiative. She is currently in development with her feature film, HUNGRY GHOSTS, with the support of the Canada Media Fund.
Louisa volunteers as a mentor and story editor/dramaturge for emerging writers and directors. She is proud to have been part of VAFF’s Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon and the Or Festival, supporting the local performing arts community.
Louisa worked as a professional 2nd Assistant Director with the DGC BC and served on the EDI committee from its inception in 2016 until 2022, working to create safe and inclusive workplaces. Previous AD credits include feature films "I, Robot," “Cabin in the Woods,” "Night at the Museum 3, "and television shows "Supernatural,” "Battlestar Galactica," "The 100," Netflix’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” and Apple TV’s “See.”
Louisa’s ADHD means she has a plethora of hobbies, as well as 3 (small-ish) aquariums, a forest of house plants, and a greek tortoise named Petra.
